Widow of Fallen Soldier 'Broke Down Into Tears' After Trump Brushed Off His Death

President Trump is no stranger to insulting the families of fallen soldiers. As a candidate he repeatedly denigrated Khizr Khan, whose son died in Iraq. This week, Trump exploited the death of Marine Robert Kelly, Gen. John Kelly’s son who was killed in Afghanistan, to prove President Obama failed to call the families of fallen soldiers.

But on Tuesday night, Trump once again proved that the depths of his depravity knows no bounds when he called Myeshia Johnson, the widow of U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson who was killed in Niger more than two weeks ago.

“He knew what he signed up for,” Trump told Johnson during a phone call that happened shortly after La David’s remains arrived in Miami, FL. “But when it happens it hurts anyway.”

Rep. Frederica Wilson, a Democrat representing Florida’s 24th district, who was with Johnson when she took the call, confirmed Trump’s monstrous remarks in an interview with WPLG. “Yes, he said it,” Wilson said. “It’s so insensitive. He should have not have said that. He shouldn’t have said it.”

On Twitter, Phillip Rucker, a reporter for The Washington Post, said Johnson “broke down in tears” when Trump brushed off her husband’s death as just part of the job.

Wilson also recounted the harrowing scene at Miami’s airport when La David’s remains were flown in. From WPLG:

Wilson witnessed as the widow, who is expecting their third baby in January, leaned over the U.S. flag that was draping his casket. Her pregnant belly was shaking against the casket as she sobbed uncontrollably. Their daughter stood next to her stoically. Their toddler waited in the arms of a relative.

According to both WPLG and Rucker, Wilson was in the car with Johnson’s widow because she is close with the family. Before he joined the army, La David Johnson participated in a mentorship program Wilson set up in 1993.

La David and Myeshia have a six-year-old, a two-year-old, and one unborn child. Johnson’s family and Wilson launched a scholarship fund for the children, which you can donate to here.
