The teenage gunman who shot two high students outside a Wisconsin prom on Saturday night is dead, local police confirmed on Sunday.
Police identified the shooter as Jakob E. Wagner, 18. According CBS affiliate WSAW-TV, Wagner graduated from Antigo High School last year.
According to a statement on the Antigo Police Department Facebook page, Wagner arrived at the prom around 11 p.m. with a rifle and began shooting outside the school. Two students attending the prom were shot at random, police said.
A young woman was treated for a gunshot wound and released, police said. A young man is undergoing surgery for non-life-threatening injuries related to a gunshot wound.
Antigo police officers who were patrolling the parking lot heard the shots and fired upon the Wagner, critically wounding him. He died shortly afterward after lifesaving measures were attempted at a local hospital.
All the students were safely evacuated from the prom by about 3 a.m., police said.
Police said they are searching Wagner’s residence. The initial investigation indicates he is the only shooter.
